Is the AI Revolution just the tip of the technological iceberg?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing at an unstoppable pace. Are we prepared for what the future holds?

Do you remember when AI was something out of science fiction? When we thought it was just for "geeks" or that it would never go beyond ChatGPT and other more "general" use tools?

The reality is that AI has become a key technology for development and innovation in various sectors and fields, such as health, education, security, entertainment, and the economy.

Most current AI applications are based on what is known as weak AI , that is, AI that focuses on a single task or specific domain, and that has no ability to reason, understand or generalize beyond what it has been programmed to do.

But what is to come is the real revolution: strong or general AI , one that can match or surpass human intelligence in any field or activity, and that has the ability to learn, adapt and create on its own.

This AI does not yet exist, but many experts believe it could arrive in the coming decades, with unpredictable consequences for humanity.

One of those experts is Mustafa Suleyman , co-founder of Google DeepMind , Google's artificial intelligence division. Suleyman believes that "generative AI is just one phase" and that "what's coming next is interactive AI ." According to him, this is a "very, very important moment in the history of technology" that many people underestimate.

These statements come at a time when there is some "fear" that the rise of generative AI has been overhyped.

In addition to the development of strong AI, AI also poses an ethical and social challenge. On the one hand, AI could be used to create autonomous systems capable of making decisions with significant consequences for human life. On the other hand, AI could be used to create autonomous weapons that could cause catastrophic damage.

In response to these challenges, leaders and experts in the technology sector shared their views on the matter in a historic hearing before the United States Congress. The objective was to discuss the regulation and social impact of AI.

Among those in attendance were Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Sundar Pichai (Google), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Tim Cook (Apple), and Satya Nadella (Microsoft), among others. Together, they called on Congress to establish a clear and balanced legal framework to regulate the development and responsible use of AI.

AI is a technology with enormous potential, but also with significant risks. It is important that we prepare for the future of AI, from a technical, ethical, social, and legal perspective.

We are facing an iceberg whose surface we have barely explored, but whose depths may hold incredible surprises. The question is: are we prepared to discover them?
