Creativity is one of the most human of abilities. It allows us to generate original and innovative ideas, which has led to great advances in art, science, literature, and music. But what if AI could also be creative? What if it could even surpass humans in creative tasks?

Can AI truly be creative?

Two recent studies point in that direction. One of them, conducted by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, compared business ideas generated by humans with those generated by machines. The results were astonishing: of the 40 best ideas, 35 came from GPT-4 models.

Another study, published in the journal Nature , corroborates these conclusions, demonstrating that AI models outperformed humans in tasks related to divergent thinking.

Does this mean that humans are about to be replaced by machines?

No, at least not entirely. The brightest human minds still excel at creativity, but the overall trend points to a rise of AI in specific creative processes .

What are the advantages of creative AI?

Creative AI has great potential to revolutionize how we create and consume content. For example, it could help us to:

  • Generate new ideas faster and more efficiently

  • Automate repetitive creative tasks

  • Create personalized content for each user

What are the risks of creative AI?

Creative AI also carries some potential risks, such as:

  • The possibility of generating harmful or misleading content

  • Violation of user privacy

How can we harness creative AI responsibly?

It is important to be aware of the potential risks of creative AI and take steps to mitigate them. For example, we can:

  • Using creative AI for ethical and responsible purposes

  • Invest in the development of AI systems that are safe and privacy-respecting.

Sam Altman , CEO of OpenAI: “Artificial intelligence is the most important technology humanity will ever create. I believe it will be the last invention we will need.”

According to an Adobe study, 74% of creative professionals surveyed said they use or plan to use artificial intelligence to improve their work, while 31% said artificial intelligence helps them generate new ideas.
